Integrated Boarding Programme

There is more to education than just achieving academic excellence. In Hwa Chong, our students are intelligent, talented, motivated and capable. It is our mission to nurture our students to succeed and lead the nation and beyond.

The global economy is constantly changing and has imposed new demands and challenges. Our youth needs to acquire some new skills, knowledge and abilities to succeed in the future. The Integrated Boarding Programme (IBP) was piloted in August 2008 to enhance the holistic development of our IP students.

The Hwa Chong IBP has three main emphases - strengthening character, forging lifelong friendships and nurturing leaders.

(a) Strengthening Character

The IBP implements processes that cultivate good habits for success in every boarder. The IBP also has routines that condition the boarders to become more self-disciplined eventually.

There are Boarding Mentors (BMs) assigned to every boarder who would observe the child closely and provide timely feedback for the boarder to reflect and act with proper guidance given. The BMs are most likely to follow through with the boarder for as long as he stays in the programme. The trust level in the relationships between the BM and boarders become deeper and stronger over time.

The IBP is definitely a good training ground for boarders who wish to study abroad to learn independence; manage their lifestyle and finances; and live in a diverse community.

(b) Forging Friendships

The boarding school provides an excellent support network for boarders to discuss school assignments or projects and a conducive atmosphere for social interaction. Through common experiences and shared memories, friendships are forged which we hope will grow and strengthen over time.

One of the best ways for boarders to understand their friends' character and personalities is through long term interaction and living among them. They also learn to be more sensitive to the needs of others, to tolerate and accept individual differences and learn to integrate into a larger and diverse community. Having good inter-personal skills and a wider circle of friends beyond the class and consortia may be beneficial when boarders work in a global and cosmopolitan environment in the future.

(c) Nurturing Leaders

There will be activities and opportunities for boarders to meet our Alumni. They will be equipped with entrepreneurial mindset and lifeskills. They will become creative problem solvers and opportunities seekers who use their talents to benefit the community. They will also discuss various issues the leaders of today encounter in the market place and learn to tackle these issues from different angles. These experiences will definitely broaden their horizon and challenge their perception of the world around them.

Often, students made decisions about their courses of study whether in college or university at the last minute or without knowing what he was getting into. Through the IBP, boarders have opportunities to meet scholars, graduates and undergraduates from local and overseas universities. Boarders have become more aware of available choices for tertiary education, scholarships and careers.

Wouldn't it be good to plan ahead?

The boarders should become more aware of available choices for tertiary education and careers. Thus they would be more prepared to make informed decisions that suit them best.

Mentoring

One of the key success factors of the IBP is our commitment to mentor the boarders. Our Boarding Mentors are committed and professional as they are experienced teachers or counselors who are trained and involved in student development. We have a good mix of male and female mentors too. Although we may not match the same level of care that parents could give, we do our best to care for and guide the boarders.

In a nutshell, the IBP will surely become an unforgettable and enriching highlight of the boarders' life during the High School days. Don't miss the experience!
