Edusave Entrance Scholarships for Independent Schools (EESIS)

• Given to the top 25% of the total number of students posted to Independent Schools at Sec 1 based on PSLE.
• Covers annual school fees charged by the Independent School (IS) less $156 (the annual amount of school and standard miscellaneous fees paid by students in government/government-aided schools).
• Tenable for the full six years of study at HCI, subject to satisfactory progress each year.
• Approximate Qualifying T-Score: 263-265

Edusave (Independent Schools) Yearly Awards (EISYA)

• Offered to students who are not already holding EESIS.
• Given to the top 5% of Singaporean students by level and stream in each independent school based on their school examination results at the end of each school year.
• The yearly awards cover the annual school fees charged by the IS for that year less $156.

Financial assistance is available to needy students. Apart from the Edusave Scholarship, other financial schemes such as the Hwa Chong Scholarship, Hwa Chong Bursary and financial grant, and other scholarships and bursary awards are in place to help students with financial difficulty. No deserving student will be deprived of a place in Hwa Chong due to financial reasons.

The cut-off point can vary from year to year based on the results of students who apply.
The Aggregate T-Score range is usually between 260 and 290 for the Sec 1.  
This is inclusive of bonus points for Higher Chinese at PSLE:

• 3 points (Distinction for Higher Chinese at PSLE)
• 2 points (Merit for Higher Chinese at PSLE)
• 1 point   (Pass for Higher Chinese at PSLE)

Secondary 1 – random except for GEP students who are placed in the iSpark Consortium
Secondary 2 – minor class movements
Secondary 3 – based on choice of special programmes and secondary two end-of-year results
Secondary 4 – the same classes as they were in secondary three

Students can find out more about CCA programmes during the 3-day Secondary 1 Orientation.  Every student is expected to participate actively in one CCA.

Targeted for SMOPS Platinum, Gold and Silver Awardees, GEP students and Sports Talents

DSA 2:

Targeted for all other primary six pupils who have done exceptionally well in school.

Closing date: 01 July 2011
Shortlist: 15 July 2011
Admission Exercise: 23 July 2011

Gifted Education Programme: Free Response, Dialogue
Others: English, Chinese, Math, Dialogue, Sports Trial (Exemption for special cases)

Can I apply for DSA during the Open House?
Yes. Application starts on 21 May.  Parents can apply online at the booth set up, or from home. Application ends on 12 June for DSA1 and 01 July for DSA2.  Only online applications are accepted.

When do I submit all the relevant documents to HCI?Only after your son has been shortlisted for DSA.

What is the registration fee for DSA?Application is free. An administrative fee of $50 will be levied when your son has been shortlisted for DSA.

Is Higher Chinese compulsory for all HCI students?No, but the school strongly encourages all our pupils to take Higher Chinese. We are confident that our teachers are adept at adopting differentiated methods to engage their students and help them learn effectively.

Must my son take Higher Chinese to qualify for HCI?No, he need not. It is a bonus if he does. For SAP schools, MOE awards 3 bonus points for a distinction in Higher Chinese.

What are the qualities you look for at the DSA exercise?

• Students who excel academically
• Students who demonstrate leadership qualities, e.g. Head Prefect, represented the school in public speaking or oratorical contests
• School representatives in CCAs, or scholastic competitions
• Students who are articulate and who show maturity of thought

Are students asked to leave the IP if they do not perform well?No.  Our aim is to maximize every student’s potential, and prepare him for a lifetime of achievement.

Do we need a teacher’s testimonial for DSA?There is no need for a teacher’s testimonial.

What are the strengths of the consortia system in Hwa Chong? The school provides a broad-based and seamless 6-year IP.  To empower teachers and students, we have adopted an innovative Consortia System. 

In our High School Section, the teachers and students are grouped into 4 consortia.
The system operates on the concept of a "school within a school".  Each consortium comprises a team of about 30 teachers managing a smaller cohort of students.  This provides a more holistic, supportive and customised curriculum for all our students.
