General Information
The Hwa Chong Institution National Cadet Corps has constantly been recognised as one of the top few units in Singapore in terms of achievement, ability and discipline.
HCINCC has been winning the Gold award for 15 consecutive years in the Best Unit Competition (BUC), and managed to obtain 1st and 3rd place in 2000 & 2006 respectively. We have constantly shown our mettle at competitions; placing first in 4 out of 5 Orienteering Competitions and displaying stellar results at Challenge Quest and Shooting Competitions, as well as in courses such as the Specialist Course in 2009, where we attained 8 out of 13 possible awards - an unprecedented feat that no other unit in Singapore has achieved. Our unit has also been awarded the title of “Centre of Excellence” in Precision Drill Squad in 2007.
Despite what the list of achievements may have you think, HCINCC is not wholly results-oriented. Our unit places great value in the bonds forged in a platoon after experiencing both physically and mentally rigorous trainings and learning to work together as NCOs in charge of the unit.
Equipped with M16S1 and MKIV rifles, we offer a wide range of syllabuses, including foot and arm drills, physical training and mutuals.

Drills
Do you often find yourself in awe after witnessing an impressive drill display?
To master and perform drills with coordination and sharpness is not as easy as one may think. It involves hours of effort, endurance and perseverance, and continued enthusiasm and ambition to be able to showcase drills in all its splendour and glory.
Like how any other significant achievement is attained, the effort put in is directly correlated with the end result. Before being able to march smartly and perform arms drills swiftly and sharply, for example, cadets undergo tough and demanding trainings. Focusing on one aspect of drill for an hour at a time is not only physically draining but also mentally training; but in this case, the ends definitely justify the means as the overall standard of cadets improves dramatically with every training.
Perhaps, to a mere bystander (even after viewing remarkable performances), drill may seem like a series of movements that means nothing beyond the apparent superficial appearance of strength and unity. However, to participate in drilling is a whole different experience altogether. A drill session helps more than anything to instil discipline and a sense of camaraderie among all drillers.
This effort is not only on the part of the drillers. The units’ specialists who train these cadets takes the role of a commander has to be highly proficient at giving drills and leading the men in general. This role is not as simple as it seems. Commanders must not only be precise and clear in giving commands, but also in ensuring the morale of his men never dips, and that their discipline and standards in drills remain tip-top and as high as ever.
Drills are an integral part of the NCC. NCC relies on drills specifically to enforce a high standard of discipline and performance as well as to build bonds between platoons. Without this fundamental aspect or foundation, the discipline that NCC is so well-renowned for will be no more.
Individual Field Craft (IFC)
In Individual Field Craft, cadets are taught how to camouflage appropriately and also in skills such as judging distances, target indication as well as field signals. These skills are of utmost importance to soldiers especially during warfare. By learning how to hide from your enemies as well as how to convey messages through silent actions, soldiers would have a tactical advantage during battle as the troops can stay ahead and above of their enemies.
Personal camouflage and principles of concealment such as hiding in shadows and staying low to avoid enemy detection are useful skills to allow a soldier to stay undetected by his enemy. Alternatively, a soldier can also use his knowledge in personal camouflage and principles of concealment to locate an enemy.
Factors that affect judging of distances include visibility, position of the sun, elevation, the size of target, colours, water as well as the effect of the terrain. The basic methods of judging distances, which includes the unit of measure and halving method, can help to determine the distance between the troops and the enemy troops or base camp.
Cadets will also be taught how to indicate targets in a manner that is clear, loud, and precise – a measure that is far more important than most would believe in a noisy battlefield. Several methods of target indication include the arc of fire, clock ray and finger breadth method. Cadets are also taught methods to emulate silent movement by learning the art of movement that is used by soldiers in dangerous situations, and move both silently and swiftly. Soldiers have to evaluate the surroundings and use an appropriate method of movement, such as the high crawl, low crawl and leopard crawl so as to minimize the chance of being detected by an enemy guard. Field signals will also come in handy to provide orders and information to fellow soldiers.
Learning IFC can be a fun and enjoyable experience. Cadets can have an experience akin to a soldier’s in a real battlefield, applying camouflage paint on their faces and preparing their own camouflage by gathering twigs and leaves. Usage of skills in IFC are not only limited to NCC activities, as they can also important in camping and outdoor activities, and will also help with integration into the Army as well, as cadets would have already learnt basic skills. As such, learning IFC is both fun and informative.
Training
Trainfire
Most Singaporean men have to undergo National Service, and learning how to operate a rifle is a must. Cadets in NCC are taught of the various parts of the M16S1 and SAR21 rifles, and how to handle and use it effectively. This serves as a precursor to Army life, so when cadets enlist into the Army, the various weapons used will not be as alien to them anymore and learning about them is no longer a mammoth task. In order to handle this rifle correctly and effectively, learning every aspect of this weapon is very essential.
The M16S1 rifle consists of a rifle, a magazine and a rifle sling. It can be fitted with a telescopic sight to enhance the one’s aiming at a longer distances and it also can be fitted with a grenade launcher to cover distances beyond the grenade throwing range.
The SAR21 rifle is a new, wholly Singaporean invention, with more advanced capabilities such as built in laser sights, a 1.5x scope, bullet deflectors and better weight distribution.
