Concept

The Structure of the Model ASEAN Summit

The Hwa Chong Model ASEAN Summit is first and foremost a simulation of the ASEAN Summit. The summit consists of a simulation of the real-world workings of ASEAN at different official levels – Work Group, Director-General, Senior Official, Ministerial and, last but not least, the Leaders level.

A group of 10 delegates attending the summit will represent one member country and each member country is represented by two delegates in each of the communities (4 in total) and 2 press correspondents. Delegates will role-play diverse subsets of real ASEAN.

The summit kicks off with the ministers of each community coming together for a pre-summit retreat. During the Ministerial Retreat, delegates will focus on broad discussions on policy and strategic matters. Delegates will then role play members of the work group and Director-Generals, and engage in the drafting of the declarations. Following that, delegates will assume the role of Senior Officials who will revise the policies and tie up the loose-ends if necessary. The meetings culminate into the ASEAN Summit which would involve a formal discussion between the Heads of State, the ASEAN Secretariat and the dialogue partners. In a nutshell, delegates will get to experience the real-world workings of ASEAN at every official level.
