SUTD’s first intake of up to 500 students will matriculate in 2012. The new University is distinguished by its unique interdisciplinary academic programme which incorporates elements of entrepreneurship, management and design thinking. Its tripartite partnership involving top universities Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Zhejiang University (ZJU) will draw together and create synergies from different cultures of education and research. These will lay the foundations of a vibrant and world-class university that seeks to nurture leaders who will build a better world.
The SUTD Education
The SUTD education is one that is interdisciplinary, with a good grounding in science, technology, arts, humanities and social sciences. Design as a discipline, cuts across the curriculum and provides a novel framework for the research and educational programme. The curriculum is taught through a unique pedagogy – one which starts with students organized around small group learning communities that will provide more intimate connections with faculty and one another.
SUTD students are also provided with flexible options; they do not choose their focus areas (pillars) until after one and a half years of common curriculum. This provides students with the opportunity to explore various subjects before making informed decisions about their focus areas.
At SUTD, students do not choose their focus areas (pillars) until after one and a half years of a common curriculum. As result, students have the opportunity to explore various subject areas, and make more informed decisions about their focus areas.
The Pillars of
Study
SUTD provides four pillars of study:
Architecture and Sustainable Design (ASD)
The ASD pillar considers architecture, as well as urban development more broadly, with a strong engineering emphasis related to performance and efficiency (e.g., through energy considerations, new materials, and innovative technology), systems perspectives and management, environmental consciousness, and advanced design methodology. ASD prepares you for positions in architectural design, construction, and real-estate management and development, as well as for various graduate programmes.
Engineering Product Development (EPD)
The EPD pillar’s mission is to prepare students for success and leadership in the conception, design, implementation, and operation of technology-intensive products; particular emphasis is on products whose development cuts across many fields and traditional disciplinary/departmental boundaries. The material covered includes the fundamental processes and technologies and artifacts that underpin the target products and the methodologies by which these products can be effectively designed, manufactured, and deployed. EPD prepares you for industrial positions in engineering and product development, as well as for various graduate programmes.
Engineering Systems and Design (ESD)
The ESD pillar addresses the modeling, design, optimization, and management of large, complex engineering and engineered systems whose function and performance depends both on the underlying technologies and on the socio-economic operational context. ESD prepares you for positions as system analysts or project leaders in a wide range of private and public sectors, for careers in consulting, as well as for various graduate programmes.
Information Systems Technology and Design (ISTD)
The ISTD pillar considers "Information Technology" (IT) broadly — from computer systems through artificial intelligence to software engineering — with particular emphasis on how information systems interact with the embedding context: sensing, control, and human interfaces will all play a major role. ISTD prepares you for positions as software development and IT engineers in companies large or small, for careers in consulting, as well as various graduate programmes.
In essence, SUTD
will offer the following degrees:
• Master of Architecture with a major in Sustainable Design (10 semesters)
• Bachelor of Engineering with a major in Systems and Design (8 semesters)
• Bachelor of Engineering with a major in Product Development (8 semesters)
• Bachelor of Engineering with a major in Information Technology Systems and
Design (8 Semesters)

Tuition Grant Scheme
Undergraduate students (regardless of nationality) will be eligible to receive Tuition Grant at SUTD, so long as they did not already attain a degree or higher qualification through subsidy by Ministry of Education (MOE) or sponsorship by the Singapore Government , or have taken the number of semesters normally required to obtain a degree on Tuition Grant. Non-Singaporean students will need to sign the Tuition Grant Agreement and work for Singapore-based companies for 3 years upon graduation.
Students and their two sureties are required to execute the Tuition Grant Agreement at a date stipulated by MOE. The sureties can be of any nationality, above 21 but below 65 years of age, and must not be an undischarged bankrupt. Students and their sureties are jointly and severally liable to pay the Liquidated Damages if the students did not complete serving their Tuition Grant bonds and did not receive approval from MOE for early release.
For more information and enquiries on the Tuition Grant Scheme, please refer to the Ministry of Education (MOE) website at http://sam11.moe.gov.sg/tass.
Financial Aid
Our aim is to advance knowledge and nurture technically grounded leaders and innovators to serve societal needs. To achieve this mission, we recruit and enroll the most talented and promising students, make our admissions decisions without regard to family financial circumstances and award our aid based on financial need. We aim to make SUTD accessible and affordable for all students.
We have the following financial aid options available:
